Introduce China Town
Chinese settlers first came to Thailand during the Sukhothai period. In the beginning, they came by junk boat for trade purposes. It was from that moment on that they gradually migrated to Thailand in which they were supported by the kindness of all the kings of Siam. These small Chinese communities were later established into stable and rich Chinese trade communities. These communities were first lacated along the canal near Wat Sam Pluem, Talat Noi Intersection on Samphanthawong Road. During the region of King Rama V , the king had a royal policy to place more emphasis on the role of Chinese commercial trade. As a result , the exiting Samphanthawong Road was divided and expanded into the following roads; Songwat Road, Phatsai Road, Anuwong Road and Yaowarat Road (The construction was completed in 1891). At present, these roads have become the most important ones in the China Town area.
In fact, China Town does not only include Yaowarat Road, but it extend to include Charoen Krung Road, Songwat Road, Songsawat Road, Charoen Road, and the Wanit 1 area but the fact that Yaowarat is in the centre of China Town, the road has been regarded as China Town itself. Yaowarat has become the “China Town ” in the hearts and minds among many Thais and foreign visitors throughout the world.
